The team composed of GeoMT research group members, and METU Civil Engineering undergraduate student Gokmen Dedemen and graduate student Berkan Soylemez ranked the 3rd in Geoprediction 2016 geotechnical student competition organized by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) GeoInstitute.

Berkan and Gokmen successfully passed the preliminary evaluations and were invited to make an oral presentation at the Annual GeoInstitute congress (http://www.geo-structures.org/) on 14-17 February 2016, in Phoenix, Arizona. After Oregon State and Arizona State Universities, they got the 3rd rank in the competition.

The subject of the Geoprediction 2016 student competition was to accurately predict the lateral deformations in a deep excavation in Seattle. The student team, whose academic advisor was Dr. Nejan Huvaj, used the finite element method to prepare their prediction report. Competition guideline document can be seen at the following link:

Before the congress, Gokmen and Berkan also got the chance to visit the campuses of University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University and meet with METU Civil Engineering students currently studying at these schools.
